Floor plan 1 12 Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset SP7 8HB

12 Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset SP7 8HB

Guide Price Of £575,000

Listed Grade II, Updown Cottage is believed to date from the 16th century and occupies a wonderful position on Gold Hill made famous in the 1973 Ridley Scott Hovis advertisement. Recently sensitively restored, it retains many period features including an inglenook and open fireplace and enjoys magnificent views over the rooftops of Shaftesbury towards Cranborne Chase. It sits near the top of Gold Hill, close to the centre of the town. In recent years it has been very successfully let as a holiday cottage.
The gardens are terraced and extensively planted with paths leading through them past various seating areas. At the top there is a large terrace, with magnificent views over the rooftops towards the Cranborne Chase and over the Blackmore Vale.

Shaftesbury, a Saxon hilltop town, which dates back to the times of Alfred the Great who founded the Abbey in the 9th century, (the old walls of which form part of Gold Hill) has a good range of facilities. These include cafes, restaurants, niche retailers, a boutique hotel, banks, a supermarket, a small hospital, a library, a health centre and an arts centre. More comprehensive facilities can be found in the Cathedral city of Salisbury to the east, the Georgian spa town of Bath to the north and Sherborne to the west. There are mainline railway stations at both Gillingham and Tisbury (London Waterloo) and the A303 lies some 8 miles to the North, giving access to the South West Country and London, via the M3.
