SOLD BY JACKSON-STOPS & STAFF DORKING.
A beautiful country home in a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Old Barn is an impressive period building dating originally, we understand, to the 16th Century and was moved from its original location in Sussex to its current location in 1910 by the then owners of Goddards, which is an Arts & Crafts country house at the top of the hill. The Old Barn was reconstructed by the architect, believed to be Charles Voysey, with the main reception room reputedly designed by Edwin Lutyens. The property was designed to serve as a 'home of rest to which ladies of small means might repair for holiday'. We understand that Ralph Vaughan Williams, the English composer, rented The Old Barn in the earlier years of the 20th Century.
The current owners purchased The Old Barn in 2007 and 3 years later commissioned architect, Richard Ashby & Associates, who very skilfully and sensitively transformed the property into a stunning 21st Century home with an extension in the style of Le Corbusier. The result is a truly unique home of wonderful proportions with all the rooms enjoying a charming aspect over the beautifully kept landscaped grounds. The attention to detail is very impressive, as can be seen in the style and quality of the bathrooms, shower rooms and kitchen/breakfast room. The harmonisation between old and new works superbly.
The grounds are an outstanding feature of The Old Barn having been expertly landscaped and surround the property to provide a wonderful setting. Several different zones have been created within the formal part of the gardens that subtly inter-connect and consist of immaculate sweeping lawns and generously stocked beds and borders. There is also a dedicated vegetable garden and traditional greenhouse. An extensive shaped terrace extends to the rear of the property with a wide flagstone path leading to the front gate. Beyond the driveway, there is a delightful informal garden which has been set out as a meadow screened by mature trees. In all, the grounds extend to some 2 acres.
