The implications of mansion tax

Filed under: Latest News — Four Communications @ 10:42 am

Labour’s pledge to introduce mansion tax will hit the Carsons of this world rather than the Lord Granthams, according to Nick Leeming, Chairman of national estate agents Jackson-Stops & Staff, with 44 offices nationwide.

Nick Leeming said: “The Downton Abbey view of politics is distorting the realities of who own homes in the £2m plus bracket. This will affect people all over the country, not just in London where the market has been most buoyant. Many owners are people who have worked hard throughout their working lives and have been in their homes for many years or those who have invested in their home to provide a secure retirement. Many are asset-rich and income poor and the threat of a mansion tax would force these people to sell up.

A council tax would be a much fairer way to raise income, with a revaluation of the whole system and extra bands introduced.”

The thrill of the thatch

Filed under: Latest News — Four Communications @ 3:29 pm

A necessary part of any traditional ‘chocolate-box’ English village scene is the thatched cottage, a style admired for its quaint aesthetic by visitors to the British Isles and coveted by buyers looking for an attractive rural home. The collection below of thatched properties exemplifies the charm of such houses and all offer a home pretty enough for any picture postcard.

Great Heale, five miles to the south of Crediton, South Devon, is a beautifully renovated Grade II listed thatched property. The 17th century farm house has been thoroughly restored by the current owners, who have retained the attractive period features of exposed beams, elm boarded floors and timber mullion leaded windows. This five bedroom house is set in an unspoilt rural area and there are sweeping views of the River Troney Valley from the landscaped gardens. The property is on the market for £1,675,000 with our Exeter office. For more information click here.

Stonegate is situated four-and-a-half miles west of Knutsford, Cheshire, within the pretty village of Aston-by-Budworth. The property is adorned with climbing roses and wisteria and internally is embellished with a carved oak staircase, exposed beams and trusses as well as a number of period fireplaces. The 2.25 acre garden includes a traditional knot garden, a secret garden and a stocked carp pond. The property is on the market for £1,995,000 with our Wilmslow office. Situated in the heart of the Hampshire countryside, Fish House is one of Durley’s oldest and most attractive houses. The current property is a clever combination of the old 1660 timber frame cottage and more recent renovations in the 1950s, when a northern wing was added. The seven bedroom property benefits from a separate studio within the garden, which would serve as an ideal annexe for grandparents or teenagers. The property is on the market for for £995,000 with our Winchester office. For more information, please click here.

The aptly named Four Gables is situated within the village of Clayhanger, 12 miles south-east of Taunton, the county capital of Somerset. The property is Grade-II listed, with characterful and adaptable accommodation, including a separate two-bedroom cottage annexe. The main house includes five bedrooms and spacious reception rooms with views of the pretty garden, which is laid with herbaceous borders and includes a huge sycamore tree. The property is on the market for £750,000 with our Taunton office. For more information, please click here.
