Essex is a vibrant and extensive County, a County of contrasts, which enjoys close contact and excellent road and rail links with London. The completion of the Crossrail project, due in 2019, will allow direct access across London to Heathrow Airport.

The Colne and Blackwater Estuaries, together with the Rivers Crouch and Thames in the south provide an interesting and extensive coastline, and opportunities for walks and for the ornithologist. The County is criss-crossed by a network of footpaths and bridleways, of note being the East Anglian Rides Network, suitable for exploring the County off the beaten track.
