Essex of all the Home Counties enjoys the easiest access to the City and Canary Wharf. These combine with easy access to Stansted Airport with its increasing range of national and international connections. Essex boasts excellent schools, of note being the Grammar Schools in Chelmsford and Colchester, the public schools at Felsted and New Hall and numerous Prep Schools. The attractive undulating countryside of North Essex, of the Colne and Stour Valleys, contrasts with the wide skies of the Dengie Hundred and Marshes and the rich agricultural land of The Easters and The Rodings. In the north-east of the County is historic Colchester, Britain's oldest town, and access to the water for the sailing enthusiast on the River Stour, the Walton Backwaters and close by the beaches of Walton, Frinton and Clacton. The Colne and Blackwater Estuaries, together with the River Crouch and the River Thames in the south provide an interesting and extensive coastline, and opportunities for walks and for the ornithologist. The County is criss-crossed by a network of footpaths and bridleways, of note being the East Anglia Farm Rides network, suitable for exploring off the beaten track.
