The sale of farms and estates has been a core part of our work for many decades and has probably seen the greatest changes. A substantial part of the 20th century saw the decline of many major estates with properties split up leading to land and buildings divorced from the prime residence. Arguably the most notable sale was that of the Stowe Estate in Buckinghamshire undertaken by Jackson-Stops & Staff in the early 1920’s. This 18 day sale saw the dispersal of cottages, land and contents never to be reunited. The sale by the London office of Jackson-Stops & Staff in 2009 of the Linkenholt Estate showed just how the trend has changed, the property, including the entire village and 2,000 acres of land, was sold as a whole.

This country has a finite supply of land and agricultural land continues to be in demand whether it be a relatively small acreage farmed organically with a niche market, small scale traditional farming undertaken as much for pleasure as profit, the opportunity to own a country estate with a view to protecting the countryside for future generations or the opportunity of owning land regarded as a long term investment. We look to market the diverse opportunities owning land can bring and showcase the beauty and value in the great country estates synonymous with the English countryside.
