Historic Houses and Property for sale

Welcome to our Historic Houses home page
Jackson-Stops & Staff have been advising owners of England’s historic houses from the outset. In recent years we have acted for a number of preservation trust and private owners involved in the restoration of historic houses that have fallen into disrepair. When it comes to the sale of such buildings we go to considerable lengths to research the history of the building and its architecture as we believe this helps find the right buyer and someone who understands the importance of being what could be regarded as a custodian of part of England’s built heritage.
We were the first firm to submit a report, on behalf of clients, for the exemption from Capital Transfer Tax (now Inheritance Tax) for an historic house. Jackson-Stops & Staff was also responsible for what has become regarded as one of the two greatest sales of the 20th century, the 18 day sale of Stowe near Buckingham and its contents. More recently the firm has acted on behalf of trustees of the Calke Abbey Estate, when the ownership of the property was transferred to the National Trust, and the owners of William Morris’s Red House, which has also been acquired by The National Trust.
Research and an understanding of both the history and architecture of an historic house has been a key part of the service we provide our clients. This we regard as important not just for the marketing and sale of such properties but also in providing advice to existing or new owners who look to retain their historic houses for future generations.
We wrote our first "Guide of Listed Building Legislation" in 1992 when it became clear to us that many owners found it hard to obtain professional and unbiased practical advice when dealing with the legislation. For many years Jackson-Stops & Staff has championed the cause for historic houses and has worked with a number of established heritage organisations determined to preserve or restore England’s historic buildings. This experience gives us the ability to offer our clients a comprehensive understanding of historic houses.
