Located in rural Cheshire, but less than 14 miles from Manchester and seven from Altrincham, Lymm has the best of both worlds: a sleepy charm and access to the bright lights of big cities.
You’d be hard pressed to believe it has a population of around 12,000 - its parish includes a number of hamlets: Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham, but residents do converge in the beautiful village centre. Complete with the French-style terracotta former town hall, a great variety of shops, restaurants and pubs and beautiful scenery including part of the Trans Pennine Trail, Lymm is a charming place to live and work.
Lymm village is a designated conservation area and means ‘place of running water’, which is thought to refer to an ancient stream that ran through the centre of the village. Water plays a major part in Lymm life, with the fantastic Lymm Dam and the village duck pond - the setting for the famous Lymm duck race! Lymm Dam was constructed in 1824 to make way for the A56, which runs through the village., and it’s a great starting point for several walks along footpaths and the Trans Pennine Trail and is rich in wildlife, including birds and bats.
The village has four primary schools - Oughtrington Community Primary School, Ravenbank Community Primary School, Cherry Tree Primary School and Statham Community Primary School - and a secondary school, all serving the local community and beyond. Lymm High School is a non-selective school catering for boys and girls from 11-18 and the most recent GCSE and A Level results – for both 2020 and 2019 – have been impressive. For parents and their children who want to take advantage of nearby Trafford’s selective state grammar schools, it is possible to sit the entrance exams and there are dedicated school buses ferrying pupils from the village to Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Loreto Grammar School (girls).
Transport links are excellent, with M56 and M6 junctions less than three miles away. The A56 connects Lymm to Altrincham and Warrington and you can be in open countryside in a couple of minutes. For those who prefer a slower pace of life, the Bridgewater Canal runs through the centre of Lymm, and provides a beautiful backdrop for an afternoon stroll or lunch on the banks.
Lymm has attracted its fair share of stars over the years, with many sports, business, political and music stars calling the village home. These include Terry Waite, John Stalker, Tony Wilson, Bobby Charlton, Gordon McQueen, Sammy Mcllroy, john O’Shea, David Weir, Johnny Briggs, Matthew Corbett, Suranne Jones and Ian Brown.
According to Rightmove, properties in Lymm have sold for an average price of £374,649 over the last year – that’s a 6% increase on the previous year. Most of those sales were for semi-detached properties, with an average selling price of £320,377. You can expect to pay more for a detached property – their average sale price over the last year was £589,712, with terraced properties fetching £271,840.
