THE PROPERTY

A beautifully restored historic early Georgian house with considerable presence. Listed Grade I. This is one of the most prestigious houses in the historic dockyard.

This beautifully restored historic house has considerable presence and is Listed Grade I. The property dates from circa 1723 and occupies a prominent position in an elegant terrace of Georgian houses that were built to reflect the supremacy of the British Navy and the status of their occupants. This is one of the largest houses in the terrace at approximately 7,300 sq.ft and has commanding views over the Medway. In recent years the house has been carefully renovated yet retains its original character, integrity and status. The spacious well proportioned rooms now provide excellent family accommodation. The house could well be regarded as the birthplace of HMS Victory, Britain's most famous warship and Nelson's flagship. The building of Victory was the responsibility of Master Shipwrights John Lock and his successor Edward Allen and the plans for her construction were kept in the specially designed cupboards which can still be found in the house. The property is constructed of brick, part stucco, with stone dressings and a hipped roof. It has a double depth plan and an original service wing which now encloses a flagged courtyard. Tall elegant sash windows make the rooms very light. An elegant staircase rises up through the house adding to the feeling of spaciousness. The accommodation is very flexible and a secondary staircase gives an alternative access to the first floor studio wing which could become self-contained. The reception rooms provide ample scope for both formal and informal life and the large kitchen/breakfast room provides a natural heart to the property. Additional amenities include a large cellar, gym, workshop, store rooms and garaging in the mews. The walled garden on the opposite side of the mews entrance provides a safe play area for children or a wonderful secluded escape.
