A roaring fire – one of life’s greatest small pleasures

Take the edge off the autumn chill with a winter warmer open fire or wood burner. We look at the charm and added value of having a fire and showcase a selection of our current Surrey properties for sale with a fireplace or burner.

As the evenings become darker and temperatures begin to drop, the thought of a roaring fire becomes more appealing. The open fire or burner that’s been languishing in your sitting room or kitchen during the warmer months, suddenly becomes the focal point once again. What greater small pleasure is there than to make yourself a warming drink, choose a favourite book and relax in the comfort of your own home in front of a fire?

Having an open fireplace or wood burner in your home certainly does add an attractive focal point and ambiance, not to mention value to your property should you ever choose to sell. According to Ideal Home magazine, adding a wood burning stove to your home could increase the value by around £10,000. Not bad for around a £1,000 installation fee plus the cost of the stove of your choice. Prices generally range from £500 to the thousands, giving you a great choice and a margin for profit when reselling your home.

You’ll need to factor in any remedial work necessary, such as work on your chimney to bring it up to requirements, a long liner or plastering to your interior walls but, all considered, it’s an economical way to ensure your property exudes comfort and warmth and you reap the financial benefits now and in the future.

Opening up a disused fireplace is not for the faint hearted and you may wish to get a specialist on board, but it is possible to do it yourself as long as you follow some clear and important guidelines.

You may be lucky and find a property with a boarded-up fireplace that’s revealed in all of its glory when you remove a simple piece of plywood – that’s a very satisfying and exciting experience!

There is any easier way to own the fireplace of your dreams… What better way to enjoy an open fire or wood burner than to purchase a property that has one already! Take a look at a selection of winter warmer homes that we currently have for sale...
