Recognisable for its cubic, zig-zag forms, the style and drama of art deco at its height from around 1910 to the 1930s - is still hugely popular today. The style continues to inspire architects and 62 Sinah Lane in Hayling Island, Hampshire, is an elegant example of contemporary art deco-inspired design On the market with Jackson-Stops & Staff, Chichester, the house could easily be a backdrop for a scene in F Scott Fitzgeralds classic The Great Gatsby a new film version of which is due out later this year, destined to make the era even more popular with culture buffs.

Built two years ago as a celebration of the movement by architect Jeffrey Douglas, the dramatic four-bedroom waterside property has sharp edges and classic art deco features, harking back to the 1930s, yet still providing a comfortable, practical home. I gave the style a modern twist, with a look specifically suited to the seaside says Douglas, who took inspiration from famous art deco designers, such as Albert Moore and Wallis Gilbert & Partners, when designing the house. Developer Nigel Slydell, who commissioned the work, has lived in the house for the past two years. Its 5,000 square foot inside, which makes it great for parties, he says.

The way the double-height atrium catches the light bouncing off the shoreline is terrific. With famous examples of the style including the restored Tinside art deco lido in Plymouth, the Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted and The Troxy Cinema in Limehouse, East London, 62 Sinah Lane is in good company. This is especially so on the south coast of England, with famed original art deco properties such as the Van Alen building, apartments on Brightons seafront, The Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth and the De La Warr Pavilion, restored as an art gallery and auditorium in Bexhill-on-Sea. Mark Astley, director of Jackson-Stops & Staff in Chichester, has noticed the enduring popularity of art deco-style properties, commenting that some buyers will specify it as the only architectural style that interests them.

He continues: Recently there has been a renaissance in this particular style with some modern architecture revisiting that period, and new examples of art deco being built. Nigels property is a good example of how to create a superb modern art deco property that the architects of the 1920s and 30s could only have dreamt of, with todays technology and resources available to them. On Sinah Lane in particular, there are three or four examples of the Bauhaus school of architecture. I am told that students of architecture seek out these showpieces of art deco style.
