Jackson-Stops’ property pedigree – selling homes across Cheshire and North Wales since 1910

Jackson-Stops has been successfully helping people like you move since 1910, and had a presence in Cheshire and North Wales since 1945. We’ve been entrusted to manage the sale and purchase of homes large and small, on the coast and in the city, in rural idylls.

We thought it might be both fun and informative to show you some of the historic sales we’ve been involved in, to give you an idea of the history of Jackson-Stops in this area and the expertise, gained over many decades, that we offer to those selling their homes.

Our Chester branch opened its doors in 1945, and almost immediately Jackson-Stops was instructed to find a buyer for Gwrych Castle Estate near Abergele, Denbighshire, North Wales, at the direction of Rt. Honourable, The Earl of Dundonald. The sale took place by auction on Thursday 11th July 1946, as we can see by the brochure below (a brochure that would have cost you 2/6 to buy).

Described as "a unique opportunity to acquire a romantic Castle, a Gentleman’s Country Residence, Farm, Cottage or Parcel of Building Land, close to the sea in the only remaining unspoilt portion of the popular North Wales Coast”, the 50-page brochure describes every lot available for sale in minute detail, complete with black and white photographs.

1946 saw the sale of Bryn Gwynant in Caernarfonshire together with part of Lake Gwynant and Woodlands, which was auctioned in May of that year. Inflation bites, with the price of a copy of this brochure at 6d. This “convenient and easily run Stone Built Residence” with “lovely grounds, lodge and four cottages and flats” alongside part of the lake “together with fishing rights and a double boat house” features a fold-out A2 map of the area.

As Jackson-Stops cemented its reputation in the North West and North Wales, properties began to be sold across Cheshire, with the sale of Home Farm, Mollington, Chester taking place by auction in 1957. By 1968 we are in glorious technicolour with the sales brochure for part of the Vaynol Estate in Caernarfonshire – “an interesting sale of lakes, fishing, vacant cottages, freehold land and investment properties”. In total 138 lots were offered for sale in an auction that took place at The Royal Hotel, Caernarfon on Friday 12th July 1968. There’s a handwritten note in the 50-page brochure that says “salmon do go through the lake and have been hooked. Good brown trout fishing”.

Jackson-Stops – the trusted Cheshire estate agent
Finding a trusted estate agent has been key for many of our clients, and a considerable number of those who buy properties from us eventually become repeat customers, whether it be the sale of the property they bought from us or indeed helping with the acquisition or disposal of another home within the Cheshire, Wirral or North Wales. There are too many to list, but we do have a few examples.

Sibbersfield Hall in Churton near Chester was sold by Jackson-Stops in March 1975, with the help of a glossy brochure with a colour photograph glued to the front and a wonderful feature in Cheshire Life (some things don’t change!) Listed as “a fine residential and agricultural property” it included the hall, the farm and “accommodation land” – in total 64.72 acres and was to be sold as a whole of in three lots. We also have records of the sales brochures for the entire contents of the Hall and another for “a sale of antique and modern furniture and effects”.

In 2005, Jackson-Stops was again appointed to sell the property, this time with the aid of a fully colour brochure containing beautiful photography and details of the newly-required EPC rating.

The Gelli Gynan Estate situated just beyond Mold in a picturesque rural part of Denbighshire, was first brought to market by Jackson-Stops in the 1950’s, followed by another sale in the 1980’s and most recently offered in 2013. All three involved Jackson-Stops.

We have recently completed on the sale of Hampton Hall, Malpas – ‘a handsome country house occupying a private position approached through parkland’, and this is the third time we have been appointed to manage the sale of this property. First in 1984, again in 2005 and most recently in 2022.

If you’re thinking about moving home and are looking for a well-respected, established, expert property agent in Cheshire, Wirral and North Wales, we’d love the opportunity to find out more about you, your property and your requirements. Please do contact our Chester team:
