Why I love Devon and my job!

Emma Tallack our property assistant in Exeter explains why she loves her job

I love Devon! What’s not to love! It is a landscape filled with picturesque villages and rolling hills, golden beaches and rugged moorland, lively cities and seaside towns with their coloured beach huts and quaint tea rooms. Devon is beautiful!

I recently undertook a charity cycle ride along the Tarka Trail in North Devon.   Riding along the old railway track I could only smile and wonder at the sheer beauty and diversity of the countryside as we passed by. The superb views across the Taw estuary with its abundance of birdlife was then followed by a varied landscape of leafy woodland and farmland. As I rode along this scenic route I realised how lucky I am to have a job that enables me to travel around all corners of this amazing county, enthusing to potential buyers about the merits of living in such a special place. Not only that but I also get to view the most beautiful houses whilst meeting all sorts of interesting people!

It is a privilege and joy to assist potential buyers in finding their dream home. Experience has taught me that estate agency is not just about sales but also about people. When I am asked what I do for a living I wait for the look of distain and mistrust that inevitably follows when I reply “I am an estate agent”. The belief that agents are only interested in achieving a sale and securing their commission obscures the human side of the job in which the stress and anxiety many buyers and vendors feel need considerate and careful handling.  As the sale proceeds and negotiations have been agreed, the conveyancing has been finalised and eventually exchange of contract takes place, it is with pure joy that on completion day you can hand over the keys (along with a bottle of Champagne) knowing that you had a small part to play in somebody realising their dream in a beautiful part of the world!
