Why Somerset?

Brian Bishop, Director in the Taunton office with over 40 years experience living and working in Somerset, extols the attractions of the county.

Somerset is one of the largest and thought by many to be one of the most beautiful counties in the country,  renowned for its diverse landscapes of the historic Somerset Levels, cider Orchards and patchworks of farmland. Taunton the county town is surrounded by dramatic ranges of hills, the Quantocks to the north, looking towards the Brendan hill to the west and the Blackdown Hills in the south. Exmoor National Park also provides endless heather topped hillsides providing excellent walking and riding country.

Taunton itself has excellent communication links having a mainline railway station with fast trains scheduled to arrive at London Paddington within an hour and forty-five minutes on the fast service. The M5 Motorway can be joined at junction 25 providing fast and easy access to Bristol, the Midlands, and Exeter. The A303 also providing a fast route to London can be joined at Ilminster.

For the young family, Taunton has excellent schools,  both State and Independent, including Kings Hall Preparatory School, Kings and Queens Colleges, and Taunton School. Richard Huish Sixth Form College also has an excellent reputation.

The town centre has many of the well-known high street stores with a number of boutique-style shops and boasts a choice of fine dining restaurants, including The Castel Hotel. Taunton is also well placed on the map for the keen Cricketer! with the Country Cricket Ground seeing some top standard fixtures.

For those looking to move to Somerset, there is a great variety of styles of desirable property, from pretty thatched cottages, more formal period town and villages houses, farmhouses with some land and of course the much-coveted old rectory!
