HISTORY The name of the property commemorates Ursula Dawson Scott, whose ashes lie beneath its hearthstone. She inherited the garden from Catherine Amy Dawson Scott, the founder of the international P.E.N. Club which to this day campaigns for political freedom for writers. Having connections to the Royal Family, Ursula used to exercise Edward VIII's greyhounds on the spectacular beach at the bottom of the lane, and it is reported that HM George V and Queen Mary made private visits. C.A. Dawson Scott was a novelist and literary salonniere who wrote frequently about Trevose Head. Ursula's Garden occupies the site of her writing studio, to which she would invite literary colleagues to stay and work. These included John Galsworthy, H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Renault, Dorothy Richardson: while Noel Coward would immortalise his hostess as Madame Arcati, in Blithe Spirit. A keen spiritualist, she latterly occupied a tent on the beach reading the Tarot. Her daughter in law Ursula was a student at the Slade. Leading painters of the day (Munnings, Hepworth, Leach, Hodgkins, Barry, Winifred Nicolson) visited whilst painting the coast, as well as more recent writers such as Causely, Russell and Betjeman. Her daughter Frances, a prima ballerina at the Rambert, entertained de Valois, Fonteyn and Macmillan. THE LOCATION Constantine Bay is one of the most sought-after bays in North Cornwall, a renowned surfing beach. The bay has rock pools to the left and sand dunes to the right and gentle headland walks in either direction where the South West Coastal Path provides a scenic walk to several other sandy beaches. At low tide it connects with its sister beach, Boobys Bay, giving a stretch of more than half a mile of golden sand. The championship Trevose Golf & Country Club is a short stroll and just five minutes away is the striking harbour town of Padstow offering stunning scenery, gourmet restaurants, wine bars, galleries, shops, and more beaches along the estuary. The nearby village of St Merryn offers a Rick Stein public house, wine bar, pubs and shops and is central to several sandy beaches including Porthcothan, Treyarnon and Harlyn Bay where The Pig Hotel & Restaurant add to the quality eateries in the locality.
