A truly magical and unique primary or secondary home, featuring an adjoining restored Great Western Railway carriage producing a very healthy income, offering four bedrooms in total. Set within delightful gardens and just a short walk from the beach.
THE PROPERTY
Positioned just a stroll from the sandy and shingle beach of Eype, this wonderful property presents a rare opportunity to acquire a magical property that could happily be used as a main residence or a holiday home. It also generates a very healthy rental income in one of the most sought-after locations on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
Adjoining the house is the restored Great Western Railway carriage. Recorded as an 1870 passenger coach built at Swindon Works, it is among the earliest English examples outside a museum. It was brought to Eype in 1922, reportedly on a steel trolley made by Bridport Iron Foundry and drawn by horses. A newspaper feature from 1984 records its long life as a much-loved family home, and the interest it attracted from holidaymakers passing through the village, and in the 1950s, the carriage was built around to create the accommodation now used as the adjoining annexe. Formerly owned by a well-known BBC Antiques Roadshow presenter who further enlarged the property, this magical hideaway has a story few houses can match. It offers all the charm and comfort of a first-class carriage on the Orient Express, combined with the enormous benefit of being able to enjoy the sea and explore this remarkable part of West Dorset.
The railway carriage has been thoughtfully incorporated into the main home, but can also be self-contained retaining a sense of privacy, making it ideal for guests or even a fortunate teenager. It also benefits from its own private garden. Unsurprisingly, the carriage has an established history as a holiday let and attracts a high level of repeat holiday business from visitors far and wide, producing an impressive rental income.
The main house itself has been restored with great flair and attention to detail, offering beautifully presented and spacious accommodation throughout. The superb family kitchen is particularly impressive, featuring a range of attractive fitted units, vaulted ceilings with skylights, and an Aga. There is ample space for a kitchen/dining table, creating the perfect social hub of the home. There is also a utility room, pantry and separate WC.
A long hallway leads from the kitchen to further accommodation. There is a truly lovely principal bedroom with an en suite bathroom, and another double bedroom with a shower room. Again, these rooms have been so carefully and cleverly designed, with charm bursting out of every corner.
To the far end of the property is a majestic sitting room: a real surprise, and ideal for entertaining on a large scale. This room is perfectly proportioned and flooded with natural light, with beautiful chequered tiled flooring. It very much has the feel of a classic 1920s luxury home.
Alongside this is a further bedroom with en suite shower room, which would also make a very good study, TV room or snug, with direct access to the beautiful gardens.
OUTSIDE
Surrounding the property are the most delightful gardens, nurtured with a huge amount of care, attention to detail and thought. It is a true oasis, and very much a utopia for young children and pets. In spring, these gardens are covered in bluebells and are easily maintained, with many places to sit and enjoy this fantastic setting. There are also very useful outbuildings ideal for garden storage, and a driveway with ample parking for 4 cars. There is lapsed planning consent for an annexe in the meadow. In all 0.57 circa acres.
