West Ashling is a particularly popular village, being well situated for access to local schools and to Chichester itself. West Ashling has a village primary school and good local pub.
More comprehensive facilities can be found in the nearby cathedral city of Chichester in a partly pedestrianised centre. Sports and recreational facilities in the surrounding area are numerous, with a number of golf courses, the nearest being at Goodwood which also provides a well-known country club with modern gym, swimming pool and tennis courts.
Goodwood is also home to its internationally known racecourse, whilst the annual Festival of Speed and the Revival of its historic motor circuit have become prominent events. The nearby waters of Chichester Harbour and the Solent are also popular with sailors and there are a number of sailing clubs, most notably at Bosham, Itchenor and Chichester Marina. The beaches at the National Trust reserve at East Head and neighbouring West and East Wittering attract many windsurfers, and provide a local centre for the more recent sports of landboarding and kitesurfing. The rich and varied countryside of the South Downs is easily to hand and has recently been designated as a National Park.
Communications are good with the A27 providing vehicle access to various centres along the South Coast including Brighton, Worthing and Portsmouth. There is a choice of road links to London including the A3, and Chichester provides a regular rail service to London Victoria in about 1 hour 40 minutes. A slightly faster service is available to London Waterloo via Havant in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
